facebook marketingCreating engaging content can be a struggle for a lot of people. You might have great information in your head that you are just dying to share with the world. You spend all day writing the perfectly detailed article with tons of facts and examples. You are so proud of this article, you kinda want to print it out and hang it on your fridge. Instead, you add a couple photos and hit publish.

Then you wait for all the comments telling you what a freaking genius you are. You wait for the 80 million social media shares and the testimonials from people who’s lives were literally changed after reading your article or watching your video.

But nothing happens. What the hell?!?

Often times, the problem isn’t what we create, but rather how we present it. I’ll talk about writing, but this can be applied to making video blogs too. Readers need to be entertained and engaged or they simply aren’t going to take the time to read the entire article. They don’t need lengthy explanations or resources on where you got all your information. They just want to know how to solve whatever problem they are dealing with at the moment.

There are simple things you can do that will make your content come to life. You’ll be able to get your point across while being entertaining and engaging.

1. Use highly dramatic words. The words you use can turn a plain out fact into a highly interesting bit of information. Dramatic words instantly increase the intensity of the information. Here are a few dramatic words that can help you liven up your content.
• Dirty tricks
• Breakthrough
• Invasion
• Hazardous
• Cutting edge
• Eliminate
• Free
• Supercharge
• Sexy
• Discover

As you’re reading online articles, magazines, or even the newspaper, pay attention to how these types of words are used to make even the most ordinary information sound life changing.

2. Create a Compelling Title. Your title is your first line of offense. If you can’t draw readers in with your title, your article isn’t going to go over very well. Try using some of the highly dramatic words suggested above when writing your article titles. Did you notice my title for this article? I could have written something like “5 Ways to Increase Reader Engagement” or even “5 Great Ways to Increase Reader Engagement.” I went with “sexy” because…well…I like adding a little sexy to everything I do, and I used “supercharge” because I don’t want to take your engagement from 3 comments to 5 comments. I want to take your engagement from 3 comments to 300 comments.

becoming an authority3. Use smaller sentences. Don’t try to impress people with super big words or your impressive knowledge of comma usage. You’ll lose a lot of readers with continuously long and complicated sentences. Did you know most newspapers write to a 5th grade reading level? That is to ensure they don’t talk over readers’ heads. They want everyone to feel comfortable reading their paper. You should do the same. Write short and concise sentences.

4. Be confident. Just tell people what they need to know. Do not start every sentence with “I think” or “I believe” or “In my opinion.” This makes it sound like you aren’t 100% sure what you’re talking about. It also makes it sound like what you are saying is only one of many possible things. While this might be true, that is not the message you want to be sending. When you write with confidence, you are telling your readers that you know what you are talking about and they can trust you. People want certainty. Would you go to the restaurant that says “We think we have the best steak in town.” Or the restaurant that says, “BEST Steak in Town.”

5. Tell a story. I hate telling stories. Just kidding…I tell stories all the time. Not just because I love telling stories; because people like to hear stories. They pay attention during stories, and they respond to stories. They can relate better to stories, and they tend to be more engaged when listening to a story. It is also easier to discuss complicated information in the form of a story; it takes concepts out of the intangible and makes them applicable to life.

Okay. There you are…5 sexy ways to supercharge your reader engagement. Make some changes and see what happens. Good luck!!
