5 Steps to Achieving Your Goals

goalsWe talk all about goals, the importance of goals, and achieving your goals in the internet marketing and entrepreneurial niches. There is a really good reason for that. When you work a traditional job, in an office, with a boss; your motivation comes from self-preservation. Your boss tells you what to do and you do it or get fired. Your goal may not be to make your company as successful as possible, it may be to just get through the week to payday without getting fired. You may even hate your job and your boss, but you do what you’re told anyway.

When you decide to start your own business, there is no one there telling you what to do. While this may be very liberating, it can also make things harder. A lot of people become less productive. You won’t have anyone making sure you start work on time. You have to create and set your own business goals. You have to decide what is going to be best for your business, and you need to keep your business’s overall success at the forefront of your thoughts at all times. A lot of people can’t do this. Being an entrepreneur is NOT for everyone. While there are a wide range of benefits, in a lot of ways, it is much harder than simply working a job. There are a lot of risks and a lot of room for failure.

This is why discussing goals is so important. Without the ability to create and achieve goals independently, you won’t succeed as an entrepreneur. This isn’t to say you can’t seek help; I actually encourage it. However, the drive to work towards a goal until it is accomplished has to come from you.

1. Write them down. This applies to all goals. Get a notebook or start a file on your computer where you can just record goals as you think of them. This will accomplish two things. First, it will get the thought out of your head for the moment, which will help your current productivity. We’ve all been there…your working on a project, working out, or trying to sleep, when all of the sudden the most amazing idea pops into your head. You are so distracted by your amazing idea that you are no longer focused on what you should be doing at the time. To prevent this, you can write the idea down and give yourself a time when you can focus all your energy on thinking about your new idea. For example, you’re in the middle of writing a new blog post when this idea hits you. Write it down and commit to focusing your attention on your new idea as soon as you are done with your new blog post. This will allow you to focus on your post, and it will motivate you to finish your post quickly.

The second thing writing your goals down will accomplish is it will make them real. Once a goal is written down, it is a concrete idea that you can work towards. This is true regardless of what the new goal is…it may be a new business idea, it could be to attend the next Marketing Mayhem event, or even to learn how to cook a soufflé or run a 5k. It doesn’t really matter what the goal is as long as it is important to you.

2. Create a Plan. Often times our goals aren’t as simple as getting something done. Although it would be nice to just wake up and run a marathon if that is your goal, without training and preparation, you’re more likely to fail…end up passed out on the side of the road with massive leg cramps and shin splints around the three mile marker. Accomplishing a big goal requires planning. Typically, there are several smaller goals that will need to be accomplishing leading up to the larger goal. Let’s say you want to go to the next Marketing Mayhem, but you don’t have the money readily available. You need to create a plan on how you are going to make the money. Whatever your goal is, your plan should include a list of steps that will allow you to reach your goal. Each step should have a list of tasks that will allow you to complete that step. The more detailed your plan is, the easier it will be for you to execute. Planning out every possible detail leaves less up to chance.

3. Make a commitment to your goal. Goals are great, but if you aren’t fully committed to achieving it, you aren’t going to. This is true for even the simplest goals. People will naturally make time for the things that are important to them. Likewise, they will make excuses for the things that aren’t important to them. Every minute of your day is valuable and you choose how to spend your time. Even if you have to wake up earlier or stay up later; your goal is not going to accomplish itself.

call to action button4. Schedule time for your goals. You need to look at the plan you create to accomplish your goal and carve out time in your current schedule to dedicate to accomplishing your goal. Not specifically blocking out time is a major downfall for a lot of people because life always happens. You may think you’re going to work on your new project sometime Tuesday, but then Tuesday comes and a buddy invites you out for lunch, your significant other comes home early, or your kid asks if you want to go for a bike ride… Unexpected things always come up, and if you don’t have a schedule you are committed to, those unexpected things are going to derail your plan.

5. Do it. You have a goal. You have a plan. You have a schedule. Now, all you need to do is start. As you work through your plan, check off the tasks you accomplish. Don’t think about how far you are from your goal; just focus on how far you’ve made it so far. Maintaining motivation can be hard; especially when you are working towards a goal that takes weeks, months, or even years. Great things are never accomplished over night. They take dedication and hard work.

There you go…5 steps to achieving your goals. Taking this information and acting on it is completely up to you.
