Within the world of internet marketing, there is a strong focus on numbers.

• Number of daily visitors
• Number of Facebook likes
• Number of Twitter Followers
• Number of people subscribed to your email list

These numbers are important. However, your goal should be to attract quality, as well as quantity. Don’t focus on increasing your numbers so much that you lose sight of who your target audience is. Whenever you embark on a new marketing activity, you should ask yourself 3 questions.

Are these people buyers?

Do they fit within my target audience?

Will the traffic I’m attracting enable me to reach my cost per action goals?

It is not uncommon for internet marketers to get drawn into the trap of trying to please everyone. Every product should have a target audience, and they should be your primary focus.

Here’s an example for you. A few years back I had a successful dating advice website. My target audience was single women 35 and over. While I also attracted women in their 20s, they were not my target audience. I welcomed them to my website and offered advice where I could, but  my focus stayed on my target audience. That means all my keywords, images, videos, blog posts, etc. were designed to target single women 35 and over.

There are a wide variety of online tools, websites, and applications designed to help you drive higher quality traffic to your website. These tools work by helping you to identify and examine the factors (key words, images, topics, etc.) that are most responsible for getting you the highest quality traffic. Unless you are simply offering a public service, the goal in this business is to increase your conversion rates, which means the quality of your traffic is essential.

Here are 5 tools that help drive higher quality traffic

1. SEOBook

SEOBook offers keyword research. There are a wide variety of keyword research tools available on the web, and for the most part, they all have their advantages and disadvantages. SEOBook is a great choice, and it provides both free and paid services, so you can try it out before making a decision. SEOBook also provides services such as a duplicate content checker, which will help you ensure you are providing quality and original content. This may be particularly helpful when you have other people writing articles for you.

2. Google Analytics

Google Analytics will track your conversions, and it provides insight into which traffic sources are providing the best conversion rates. Google analytics is an essential tool in driving quality traffic to you. Not tracking your results is like working in the dark, you’ll have no idea what is working and what is not.

3. Quantcast

Quantcast will give you a demographic profile for your site. This will provide you with a better understanding of who is visiting your website, so you can make adjustments as needed. If you find your numbers are high, but your conversion rate is really low, there is a solid chance you are attracting low quality traffic. You will need to take a step back, examine your current traffic, and create a plan to target higher quality traffic.

4. CrazyEgg

CrazyEgg provides you the ability to stalk your traffic, which will allow you to better optimize your website. CrazyEgg will show you which posts, links, or images your visitors are clinking on most. You can use this information to make sure these highly clicked on places provide visitors with something to buy.

5. RankTracker

Ranktracker allows you to track your organic search rankings for hundreds of keywords simultaneously. It provides amazing results within a small period of time. Whenever you try something new, you can check Ranktracker to see what kind of effect your new action had on your ranking. This information will allow you to focus more energy on what is working and eliminate what is not working.

Now, in the past I have talked to you about not being distracted by shiny objects. That lesson is not to be discarded. Each of these 5 tools are highly useful and can improve your overall business, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend the rest of today downloading and implementing them. Take a moment to consider the weak spots within your business.

Are you unsure of who your current audience is?

Do you feel frustrated not knowing if all your hard work is actually increasing your ranking?

Are you confused by why some of your posts seem to go viral while others are left unread?

Decide where you need the most help right now and focus on that. You’ll go crazy trying to fix everything at once.
