Today, social media is transforming the marketing landscape for all businesses. It has the capacity to allow sound relationships with existing customers while simultaneously reaching out to potential customers.

As a business owner you want to make money not spend it, right?  Unfortunately, if you believe that all forms of advertising take money, you are sadly mistaken. One of the ways that you can promote your online business, without having to spend a dime, is by using social networking websites.

Before you jump in to social media, first think about the answers to these basic questions:

• Why do I want to participate in social media?
• How can social media improve my business?
• How will social media affect my customers’ experience?

Answers to these questions will help determine your engagement.

Let’s get started…

1. First, set up your profiles on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Youtube. It is best to use your name instead of an obvious nickname that people may construe as spam. Be sure to add an avatar (profile picture) when you set up your accounts. Nothing says “newbie” more than having a default/generic graphic inserted by Twitter or Facebook. Include a short bio about you and your business and always include your website link(s).

2. Create and post rich content about what your customers would expect from someone in your business. Give advice and tips about what you or your business can provide that would be valuable for someone looking for your product or services. Don’t view social media sites as just a place  to simply solicit. It’s a place for conversation. It’s about earning your customers’ attention.

3. Engage in conversations with you customers and new friends. The exciting thing about social media is it offers the opportunity to have two-way conversations with your customers and potential customers. What better way to know how to best serve your customers’ needs than to hear directly from them?

4. Have fun and Be Yourself! People can see through marketing talk. Be passionate about what you do and let your personality shine through. Share a few business insights, maybe some mishaps, jokes, words of wisdom and laughs. Let people see you as a person and not a regurgitating robot.
