Hey Everyone!

The other day, I sent an email to my list telling them about a new product that had just hit
the market.

Not long after I hit send, I got an email response from a client of mine who said to me:

“So Devon,
What’s going on with this? I watched the Video…. I’m asking because this looks like another new [bright shiny object] that sounds good and goes nowhere fast!”

Well… today I’m going to reveal to you THE TRUTH about ‘Bright Shiny Objects’

Ok, so did that make sense? Do you understand how WHAT you’re being offered and WHERE you are in your business are the ultimate determining factors in deciding whether or not you should buy something?

Now, with that info in hand, I want you to consider WHAT you’re about to purchase with a very critical eye. And if you feel that it’s the right “Bright Shiny Object” for you, then BUY IT AND IMPLEMENT THE HECK OUT OF IT!

But if what you’re considering buying doesn’t “jive” with what you’re doing right now… then IGNORE IT! Even if it comes from me!

Anyways..I hope you found today’s blog video helpful!

And As Always….

Hi Devon: You are correct. I am working on a campaign for email right now. I saw the email you sent, and it was on blogging. I do not blog, as I haven’t mastered that yet, so I think your Video was a great challenge to all of us. I looked at it, knew it wasn’t for me, at this time, and went on with what I was doing.

Thank you for your continued lessons.

will improve our current business. You are the first IM guru’ that I have heard say that.

    Hey Devon,

Your truly an inspiration in your presentation. You provide great value and content. I’m in the process of cleaning up my email accounts and you made up my cut. Eliminating most out of my email account really helps prevent the next shiny object from appearing:)

    Keep on keeping on!!

  10. That’s the exact problem I’m having!! It’ hard to let some of my shiny objects go. It’s become a habit…like AA. I might need help!!!

  11. Yo Devon
you are sooooo right i have a hard drive so full of bright shiney objects you can see my house from space 🙂

  12. Hi Devon,

Superb video as always and very well put,

The phrase “Bright Shiny Object” I’m sure was coined because of the visual association it conjures up rather than whatever it is that’s actually being offered, because the visual makes you think of something you can hold in your hands and gaze at in wonder until the next brighter, shinier one appears and what you are holding in your hands looses it’s luster and gets dropped to go grab the other one.

Most times a bad one is usually a non-related program, eBook etc that takes your attention away from finishing up what you had originally started on and therefore the time you’ve put in on it so far is all wasted because you haven’t earned anything from it.

But the good ones as you said are anything that can help your finish up what you had started, or enhance it in some way to make it easier for you and or better for your customers, these are usually infoproducts that can give you a better understanding of what you’re doing, or software tools and or website scripts (or add-ons) that can accelerate your progress or enhance your finished project.

Trick is realizing which ones are which, so as you mentioned the way to do that is to develop a critical eye because when you can ask yourself “do I really need this, right now ?” that’s when you’ll start to give the needed focus on what it is that you’re currently doing and will be able to finish it up so will then be closer to the point where you can start making some income from it.

So I suppose anything that would distract you from your current path is a Bright Shiny Object, and anything that will help you in completing it (or push you through a road block) is a sound business investment.

    Cheers
    David.

You have done it again You have tied the loose ends together and make sense of things I know but it hasn’t quite registered in my mind completely yet.

Thank you for being so honest with all of us and thank you for all that you are teaching us.

  14. Devon,

That was a very worthwhile message and delivered in an entertaining style.
It is easy to be distracted. Focus obviously is vital!

  17. Hey Devon, You always keep it real. I appreciate it. Keep rolling. I always watch your videos because they always make sense and are always real. They all have a great message that helps. Thank you again.

  18. Very good advice, I have been guilty of chasing the bright shiny objects and losing focus on my current business.

  19. Hey Devon,
    Tell it, man
I have a bright shinny object drawer that’s overflowing with shinny object first year in full commitment to this business(last year).

I thought the shinier the object the more money I would make, hahaha!

Anyway for the most part I am over that but I still like looking at those objects. Then, I put em on hold, i figure if they are necessary for where I am at (as you put it), I know where to find em.
That one of thing I want to talk to

    a gift to encourage people.

Absolute gem of a message, Devon. It’s the WIG – Wildly Important Goals message, brought down to everyday language. Well done.

    Devon,

Great video!!! I feel like I’m qualified to make this comment because I am the King of Bright Shiny Objects (BSOs), and have been for MANY years!

Learning how to focus on something consistently, long enough to see results is an incredibly valuable skill to cultivate and possess. It’s also a lesson in “self discovery”. It took me a long time to realize the error in my ways regarding BSOs, but I’m getting there.

Thanks for the content. Keep up the great work! You’re one of the most honest “big dogs” in this game who is willing to tell it like it is.

BTW, you pegged the Integrity Meter when you said to even use a critical eye with stuff that comes from you. Mega integrity dude! 🙂

    v/r,
    –Robert
